Ryan Gustin New York
Student at Penn State University
Born November 8, 2002, in Rochester, New York, Ryan Gustin has consistently demonstrated a profound passion for engineering, leadership, and community service. Growing up in Penfield, NY, and now pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering at Penn State, his path is marked by a deep understanding and commitment to making a positive impact.
Educational Journey
From an early age, Ryan attended Plank Road North Elementary in Webster, NY, where he actively participated in football, basketball, and baseball from first to fifth grade. His interest in technology began to surface during these formative years, mainly through his involvement in Lego robotics. This early engagement in problem-solving laid the foundation for his future in engineering, influencing his academic and professional goals.
Years of Growth at McQuaid Jesuit
Continuing his educational journey, Ryan attended McQuaid Jesuit High School in Rochester. He embraced the school's ethos of being a "man for others." As a team leader for the McQuaid IgKnighters Robotics Team, he played a crucial role in designing and constructing the robot’s climbing mechanism. A standout moment was witnessing their 125-lb robot and two others ascend to a three-foot-high platform—a feat that earned his team the "Excellence in Engineering" award.
His proficiency in operating the school's CNC Mill turned digital designs into tangible, functional components, enhancing the robot's capabilities. His skills in CAD software and his work with materials like aluminum and steel deepened his understanding of engineering principles in practical applications.
Moreover, Ryan contributed to the school’s theatrical productions through the stage crew, gaining essential project management and technical skills. His varied interests also included cross country, junior varsity football, and violin playing, reflecting his well-rounded character.
Service to Community
He has always been deeply involved in his community. He volunteered at the House of Mercy Homeless Shelter, where he helped distribute gifts during the holidays. His work with the St. Joseph of Arimathea Pallbearer Ministry showcased his compassion for those with limited family support.
At the Maplewood Nursing Home, he dedicated over 170 hours to helping the elderly and fostering valuable intergenerational relationships. His commitment to community service also included volunteering at the Webster Fireman's Carnival and supporting local firefighters and community initiatives. His outstanding service earned him the St. Ignatius Loyola Award for exceeding 200 service hours during middle school.
Professional Development
Ryan's diverse work experience includes three years at Oak Hill Country Club, where he excelled in customer service and demonstrated his golfing expertise. His role during the 2023 PGA Championship was particularly formative, as he learned the intricacies of managing a significant event.
He also worked at Hedges Nine Mile Point Restaurant, where he honed his skills in a fast-paced environment, often receiving compliments from customers for his exceptional service. This job further developed his time management and interpersonal communication skills.
Academic Excellence at Penn State
Since enrolling at Penn State in the fall of 2021, Ryan has been dedicated to his studies in Civil Engineering. His involvement in the American Society of Civil Engineers and the Penn State Formula Racing team allows him to stay connected with industry trends and apply his classroom learning to real-world engineering challenges.
His internship at DDS Companies in Rochester, NY, during the summer of 2023 was pivotal. There, he used AutoCAD for gas main installation projects, gaining practical experience in civil engineering applications.
Personal Growth and Interests
Ryan's personal development is complemented by his travels to Italy, Hawaii, and various U.S. cities, enriching his understanding of diverse architectural and urban planning styles. His active lifestyle includes regular fitness routines and golf, and he shares his experiences in engineering, travel, and personal development on social media platforms.
Future Vision
Looking ahead, he is eager to graduate from Penn State in May 2025 and begin his career in civil engineering. His experiences, especially his semester at the University of Miami in the fall of 2024, have fueled his ambition to work in dynamic cities like Miami or New York, where he aims to contribute to innovative infrastructure projects that improve community living standards.
Engineering Tomorrow's Future
From his early days in New York to his current endeavors at Penn State, Ryan Gustin New York stands out for his blend of technical expertise, leadership, and commitment to public service. As he progresses, he remains dedicated to his core values of innovation, service, and excellence. His combination of technical skills, practical experience, and community involvement enables him to tackle the complex challenges of modern infrastructure development while upholding his commitments to social responsibility and environmental stewardship.
